General Health

The majority of sports massage techniques increase circulation, venous and lymphatic flow. These improve the body's ability and rate at which waste products are removed and nutrients brought in. This is important to keep tissues healthy.

Relaxation

Long, broad, superficial strokes can be used to warm the skin and the subcutaneous layers. This encourages the muscles and soft tissues of the body to relax, reducing stress and tension in the body.

Achieve Optimum Function

Lifting and rolling techniques along with deeper strokes and compressions can reduce adhesions (knots) in the muscles that prevent them from functioning properly. If left untreated, they can cause further problems such as pain, restricted range of movement and postural imbalances which can all then lead on to further, more serious problems.

Alleviate Problem Conditions

There are a variety of techniques that can be used to alleviate various problem conditions such as:
  • General muscular tension and aches
  • Tension-headaches
  • Muscular back pain
  • Poor circulation
  • Stress and anxiety

  • Stimulation

Percussive techniques on the skin or through clothing can stimulate the sensory nerve endings via receptors in the skin. This stimulates the autonomic nervous system (fight or flight response) and increases circulation to the skin's capillaries.

    Enhance Sporting Performance

The original role of sports massage therapy was to enhance athletic performance. Many athletes incorporate sports massage as part of their routine, using it to prepare them for their sport, aid their recovery after an event and general maintenance or rehabilitation after injury. Sports massage has many psychological benefits too, helping them to focus and boost their confidence.
